Speculation around Google Payments?

google_checkout.gifRumor has it that Google Payments may be discontinued. With all their success, as with so many others, Google (NASDAQ GOOG) assumed that by throwing enough money at something, that it will be successful but those close to the project may see a different story.

The amount of money that has gone into the project has given rise to nothing but a major losing venture for Google. While a powerhouse like Google has been able to justify the continued losses associated with Google Payments through data mining and any number of other valuable components associated with the project, at the end of the day, money talks.

No one really knows what will happen, as Google is notorious for keeping decisions under wraps until the very last minute but could Google Payments in fact go the way of Google Answers? Unless they start to turn a profit with the project, it just may, as it’s already starting to shape up to become one of the biggest losing ventures in Google’s history.

Who knows, maybe if they had the chance, they could buy eBay (NASDAQ EBAY) and make Paypal the new version of Google Payments as it did with YouTube. After all, auctions are said to be a major driving force for eCommerce and yet eBay has continued to screw that up so much in the past few years that maybe a new owner would make a real difference.
