GE - We Bring Good Things To Identity Theft
So, apparently a few weeks ago, some backup computer tape went missing, and lo and behold roughly 650,000 GE (NYSE GE) Money cardholders’ was on it. How do they transport these tapes? Horse and buggy? I mean, how many damned times do I have to read about a tape being misplaced? Is the security guy just sticking the tapes into his cargo pants and hoping he doesn’t walk too fast?
Anyways, semes like the 650k customers had their social security info on this backup tape, too. So, essentially, if you happened to have shopped at J.C. Penney or one of 100 other retailers that were not revealed in the press release, it is possible someone somewhere is purchasing all your info on the internet and they’ve already signed up for a brand new credit card in your name. Oh, well.
Hey, at least GE is offering free credit monitoring for 12 months. That way, you can monitor the scammer’s activity, and see what you would be buying if you were someone else…Let’s see, if someone else were me, what would I buy? Maybe some sunglasses and a fake mustache so I look inconspicuous.
Hey, GE, keep your “backup tapes” as secure as your regular info. Now there’s a bright idea.

This is really a bad news, how could they lose such a critical data.
650K customers is a huge number, what about backup. Can’t believe this could happen in today’s technology where information is most valuable.

Are they insane?? such sensitive data has to be handled with utmost care and yet they lose it and that too, info of 650k customers… thats really messed up stuff

It’s really bad, but if you just keep a close eye on your finances, you should be fine! Just notify your bank of any suspect transactions!

What a stupid mistake! How can they do such a thing? Can’t they send this info securely over the net?
Comment by moneywanted on 12 February 2008:
Well, if you pick up that tape, you can definately make a fine buck out of it! Sooo stupid!

I am really amused with such news hitting every now and then in this technology era. How can someone misplace a tape of such importance. Why not they make it double secure and fool proof enough to make it doubly secure. Is GE taking the customers’ personal info so lightly. This is really a thinking question one should ask?

Now is something really bad which would surely raise up the identity security issues for this company. I am sure that their is someone with in the company who did this and i think it would be good if company finds out who did it and get him behind bars…
