Identity Theft—Even Bank Chairmen Are Victims!

Identity Theft---Even Bank Chairmen Are Victims! So, I don’t know if any of you heard about this, but I got quite a chuckle. Apparently, Marcus Agius, the chairman of Barclays Bank Plc (NYSE BCS) (U.K.’s third-largest bank) became a victim of identity theft. That’s right, the big man himself!

Apparently, a scammer was able to put together enough personal information on the Bank Chaima(NYSE:BCS)n to call in and convince a Barclays employee to replace his Barclaycard in his name. The scammer took the card to a street branch and was able to get a cash advance amounting to just under $20,000.

The bank has introduced a new security code word system for senior employees so that the same incident could not happen again.

So much for Chip and Pin technology ending identity theft….

  1. Nice one. Now how are the little guys supposed to feel safe with all this technology, when it can’t even protect the bigwigs

  2. Uh uh.. I don’t know what to comment here. If even the big guy fells through the roof in the identity theft, that means we are even less secure. Why can’t we get new security code too?

  3. Nice one.
Means that nobody can take their security for granted and that everyone should be careful

  4. What this tells me is that Scammers these days have become more and more daring.
They are willing to try to scam even the big names. I am really worried :(

  5. Even several new system may be announced but having one non-sincere person can damage any security. Thats what happened in Barclays bank. One small request to the bank employees, please be sincere it will save once life.

  6. Lol, thats funny. It doesn’t really matter for the chairman because he knows about it now so he can put a stop to it and 20k is nothing for him.

  7. That is terrible. Identity theft is slightly becoming more difficult, but there are nowhere near enough precautions and safety nets currently in place. This case certainly goes to show that noone is invulnerable, well, maybe the President of the US.

  8. Wow, what can you say to that really? How does a President of such a large, successful, powerful bank not afford advisors on possible security issues? Someone in that position, I think, would have a large team of such advisors and researchers to squash this type of thing from happening LONG before it becomes a reality!

  9. I bet this guy feels like an idiot for not having better security measures. I agree though, the amount he lost is probably chump change to him. Hopefully people who see this will realize just how easy a con man can ruin your life - and take every step they can to protect their information!

  10. Everyone should have a personal shredder in their home! There is so much that can be found in one’s trash that can easily be used to gather more information, and steal their identity. It isn’t only high profile, rich people that are targetted for identity theft. However, this should be an eye opener.

  11. I can not believe that! I hope they were able to find the scam artist and that he is enjoying his view of the concrete walls around him. But let me guess - I bet he is somewhere having a blast with that 20k.

  12. This is a very scary thought. How are we to feel we are doing enough even if we are doing every precaution that has been advised? If this man, with so much money and power was not able to prevent this from happening, how can any average jane ever expect to?

  13. What is the world coming to? Everyday it seems all you can read, find, or see on TV are stories of bad news. I really hope this man will be able to recover the monies he lost. I am sure it was not a walk in the park to reach his level in society.

  14. This was scary, no need to use a pistole or any weapon to do a robbery now days. Is there a better place to be?
